What to do if a product defect appears intermittently

During a short inspection, the product may work normally. For investigating intermittent defects, the observation history, operating conditions, and preserved materials are especially important.

One successful start does not describe the entire operating history

The mechanism may jam after several cycles, the device may shut down after a certain period of time, and the connection may lose stability only under a specific load. If no manifestation was observed at the time of inspection, this is primarily the result of checking under the indicated conditions. For a broader conclusion, it is necessary to understand what exactly was tested and how closely these conditions corresponded to the reported situation.

The phrase 'periodic defect' is convenient for describing an observation, but it does not replace the establishment of a defect and its cause. The mere fact of repetition also does not automatically mean recognition of the defect as material in a legal sense: this issue is assessed taking into account the applicable rules and specific circumstances.

Keep a short log of manifestations

For each situation, record the date and time, operating mode, sequence of actions, duration until manifestation, observed sign, and what happened afterward. Separately note whether the sign recurred during normal operation and what actions were performed between episodes.

What to recordExample of a description
SequenceTurn on with the standard button, select normal mode, operate without changing settings
ConditionsStandard accessories were used; load and mode are indicated separately
ObservationAfter a certain time, operation was interrupted; indication and sound are shown in the video
Related fileVideo with the same episode designation, general view and object labeling

The table shows the way of recording, not the results of an actual study. Try not to fill in the blanks with assumptions. If temperature, load, or duration were not measured, indicate this instead of an approximate number presented as exact.

How to shoot a useful video

Show the product in full, its identifying features, and the start of a normal operating cycle. Key actions should preferably be recorded continuously. If the wait is long, save the full original file, and make a separate short copy for initial viewing indicating that it is shortened.

Capture the screen, indicators, the position of moving parts, or the sound — depending on what is being observed. Avoid loud background music and shooting in a way that makes it impossible to distinguish the product from another similar one. Filters, speed-up, and editing should not replace the original recording.

Do not overheat, disassemble, or overload the product to reproduce the symptom. In case of dangerous manifestations, stop using it. Have checks of the electrical parts, live measurements, and other special tests performed by a specialist of the appropriate profile.

Provide the conditions along with the product.

It is difficult to turn the description 'sometimes does not work' into a test program. It is more useful to list the observed symptoms and the conditions under which they occurred: after which action, in which mode, after what time, with which accessories. Attach a log and source files or an available list of materials.

In the transfer document, suggest reflecting precisely the claimed periodic manifestation. Preserve the history of reports, inspection acts, work orders, and repair information. If behavior changed after repair, separate observations before and after the intervention.

For the initial consultation, provide only the necessary materials. Passwords for personal accounts, correspondence, and unrelated information should not be included in the submission.

What the study can determine

The specialist compares the observation history with the condition of the object, documents, and the results of available checks. Depending on the task, longer observation, inspection under multiple modes, measurements, or involvement of a specialist from a related field may be required. The specific program is determined after examining the product and the issue.

For technology, a product appraisal does not always include diagnostics of electronic circuits, software, or electrical safety. If other specialized knowledge is required to provide an answer, this should be taken into account when selecting the performer and the scope of the study.

If a characteristic is not reproduced, it is useful to see in the document the conditions, duration, actions performed, and limits of inference. The phrases "not detected during such-and-such check" and "could not have occurred earlier" have different meanings and require different justification.

Questions to discuss with a specialist

  • Which characteristics of the object's state have been identified and do they correspond to the described manifestation?
  • Are the provided materials sufficient to study the cause; what needs to be supplemented?
  • What conditions and verification methods are needed to check the reported periodic occurrence?
  • What limitations does the investigation have and how do they affect the ability to provide an answer?

These are guidelines for discussing the task. Ready-made formulations can be found through search in the bank and question builder.

Discuss your task

Send the description of the item, circumstances, and available materials. After a preliminary review, it is possible to determine the feasibility of the examination, the set of necessary information, and the procedure for work.
